Just Floored!

I notice things. I'm a detail girl. I see the little things. I see what's in between the lines. Colors excite and energize me. I grew up in a colorful home. There was nary a white wall to be had. Our kitchen was green. Not a bright green but a green reminiscent of asparagus - before it's cooked. We had lovely built-ins in our kitchen. Our building was pre-war and I suppose the cabinetry was too. My mother, also passionate for color, even painted the insides of our drawers and cabinets long before others did. The drawers and cabinets were watermelon pink. Our stoves were old, Caloric, I believe and they were lovely and worked well. So why replace them?

I grew up with a grey dining room with white trim and a lavender ceiling. The room was positively delicious.

The long hallway that connected my parents' bedroom to my own was painted a lovely azure-like blue. The trim was white and the doors were bright yellow... Think sunflowers in Italy in September.

And there was my room... My room was the very best. It was my sanctuary, my oasis, my haven and my heaven. Each wall was painted a different pastel color. There was yellow, lavender, pale green and pink. Above a pale blue ceiling that I pretended was the sky. We had gorgeous hardwood floors in all the rooms but each room was covered with just enough carpeting to prevent noisy clogs (my shoe of choice for many years) from driving the downstairs neighbors bonkers! Most of the floor was covered, leaving a foot or so of the exposed hardwood all around. My rug was green and shaggy. I used to lie on it pretending it was grass. The large dome light fixture hanging from above was, of course, the sun. I used to lie on my rug, look up and daydream for hours. My dressers were white with bamboo trim and I had a wicker love-seat with matching wicker coffee table. My beds were covered with a plaid fabric that somehow contained each of the colors on my walls and ceiling. Even when the snow was falling outside my bedroom was like a garden oasis.

In our apartment prior to that one, where I lived just a few years, my mother had painted our kitchen floors. Apparently the floors were hideous - ugly linoleum. Without enough money to rip them out and properly replace them she did what anyone would do. She painted them! Painted onto our kitchen floors were large yellow daisy-like flowers bearing bright yellow petals and bright red centers. Until a few years ago I had not seen another painted floor. I've recently become obsessed.

Painted floors make a statement. They are bold and beautiful, at times demure, at times playful, at times dramatic and other times sophisticated. Perhaps you're not quite ready to take that leap of faith. Of course nothing is really ever permanent, but if painting your floors is too much for you, why not go for a bright, bold rug. Let your floor be your accessory. Let your floor make a statement. Take a chance and stand out from the crowd!

I think this chartreuse floor is happy, energetic and fun. A happy person must live here!

I'm just crazy about this high gloss pool-colored floor!

this painted floor is fab!.

I've always been mad about stripes. These stripes are playful yet elegant.

Love pink and orange!

The Flor tiles add color and texture. Pink and orange are a favorite combination of mine and I love the playful pop of color against the serious and dramatic background of the black and white.

love the FLOR tiles

Again the Flor carpet tiles add color, texture. My eye is drawn first to the floor, then the rest of the room.

love the color - the floor, bench and walls... fun, crisp!

Simple, subtle walls seem to pop more with the bright bold stripes, which are complemented so perfectly by the bright orange bench. Have I mentioned just how I adore bright colors in my home?

Again the eye is drawn down. I love the bold stripes on the floor and the table, even more I adore how the Greek key pattern on the couch repeats itself subtlety on the rug.
This room, to me, exemplifies a relaxed elegance.

love this rug!!

As a mother of three messy children I do not adore rugs or carpeting or anything of that nature beneath my table. However, should my children ever grow up and stop leaving so many crumbs on the floor beneath, I may replicate this some day! I love the pop of color from the cushions and chairs that go so well with the rug. A perfect look for a breakfast nook, perhaps.

Gorgeous!

Painted floors, as you can see above and below, can also be quite sophisticated.

If I had floors like these I may be inclined to clean them more regularly! ;)
