Stylish Notes on Decor :: 10 Reasons why I will never buy my books via e-reader (unless I'm traveling)

via Lonny
First of all, you can't curl up with an e-reader. I mean, you can but it doesn't have the same appeal as curling up with a book. You simply can't curl up with a piece of hard, cold, metal  - I don't care what you think. And you certainly can't take an e-reader into the tub. I'm a book girl. There's something about the way they feel in your hand... something about turning the page... something about the way the paper smells. Searching for titles on Amazon or iTunes isn't an experience. There's something about perusing a bookstore and all the different titles and genres. I can spend hours in a bookstore which is not the same as spending hours online.
I really don't care for the bright glare of the electronic screen, even when dimmed, it's still a jarring light. I do, from time to time, use my iPad to read on. I downloaded a couple of titles before I left for London. I wanted as little in my carry-on as possible and since I was bringing my iPad anyhow, it really made sense to use it to read. I had downloaded Ruth Reichl's memoir, For You Mom, Finally. For those of you unfamiliar with Ruth, she iss a food writer and critic and was at the helm of Gourmet before it folded.  Reading a memoir on e-reader misses the mark. Completely. Memoirs are personal, visual. E-readers are simply too impersonal for a memoir. Something is missed. Memoirs are intimate pieces of writing giving us, the reader, insight into private lives - like reading letters. An email, no matter how personal is not the same as a letter. The e-reader is simply not the same as a book. Especially when the battery dies. Books need no batteries. They don't need to be recharged. Ever. And you can share them.

Below you will find 10 reasons why I will never buy my books via e-reader (unless I'm traveling - and still, that's questionable!)

Jardin des Arbres, Cannes,
Property of Jessica Gordon Ryan/The Entertaining House

The above was taken in the home of my grandmother in Cannes. She is in yellow, on the end. I believe this was taken in the late 1960s (and I have no idea who the two other people sitting with her are.) She always had the most marvelous libraries! I wrote about her Manor House library here... I really ought to learn to use my scanner. These photographed images simply do not do her rooms justice!

XOXO,
