the greatest gift of all...

I was driving to a hair appointment on I95 today when I noticed a Grey Nissan Armada swerving furiously in  ahead of me, narrowly side-swiping a tractor trailer and a small car. I kept my eyes peeled on him never losing focus. A quick foot had me slamming on my breaks (without even a moment to look into the rear view mirror.) I hit the break without thinking. Actually, I think my foot reacted on its own. I don't really remember much except for the sound of the metal slamming and crunching once then twice into the concrete Jersey barrier  between exits 17 and 16. I hit the breaks with such force I thought for sure someone was going to slam into the back of my car. I was expecting the SUV to ricochet back out into the traffic, into me.  I couldn't look up. Instead my eyes were fixated on the grey metal object that finally came to rest on the median. The grey metal object that nearly took me out with it. Everything happened in a split second. It could have fared so much worse. I shudder to think. There was a reason...

A friend of mine told me that she had a friend who narrowly escaped death. She described it as being given the gift of extra days. I cannot think of any better gift in the whole wide world.
