Dig in! January 23rd is National Pie Day.

Did you know that January 23 is National Pie Day? Did you even know there's such a thing?

This warm apple-pie-a-la-mode-loving-girl is over the moon to learn of this!

According to the International Business Times today is National Pie Day. They also state that my most favorite pie actually dates back to ancient Egypt. Apparently Egyptian bakers folded fruit, nuts and honey into dough that closely resembled what we know as a rustic tart or galette.  This pie making tradition was then passed on to future generations of Greeks and Romans who took this idea to a new level, wrapping meat in a flour and water paste. Fast forward to modern times and those very basic, primitive pastries have evolved into the varied and delicious pies we know today.

So why not spice up your dinner with a savory pie, or delight your sweetie pie with a special treat for dessert!
Below are several wonderful recipes to try and links to their sites.

My personal favorite, the apple pie, is Martha Stewart's Recipe. Be sure to warm it before serving alongside with a scoop of the best vanilla ice cream you can find. Whipped cream simply will not do for this gourmand!

My 14 year old is wild about anything coconut. He'll go nuts (pun intended!) over this creamy coconut pie by Taste and Tell.

Key lime is another favorite in our house, creamy and tangy with a perfect graham cracker crust. For this recipe hop on over to Give me Some Oven.

And while not traditionally a pie, per se, as it's a cross between a cookie and cake stuffed with a creamy filling, the Whoopie Pie is a New England staple. Home Stories A to Z has a mouth-watering recipe.

For those wanting something hearty and savory, these delicious looking personal sized Steak and Mushroom pies can be found over at Simply Delicious.

Going back to my British roots, I would be remiss to mention these - no, not the traditional steak and kidney pie - I never really took a liking to those, but to these wonderful looking Steak, Mushroom and Guinness pies. Perfect for a winter's day - perhaps for a winter snow storm that's expected to hit the East coast this weekend. For the recipe visit

We'll hop back on over to Martha Stewart for the recipe for these individual Chicken Pot Pies. I'd be remiss not to include these with the savory pies - a favorite around here. We prefer those less creamy, filled with lots of chicken and vegetables and a light, flaky crust. These individual servings mean you won't over indulge... and maybe you'll have enough room for dessert!
