Near & Far Aid 2016 Designer House Tour Celebrates the Art of Living

Near & Far Aid, a Fairfield County philanthropic organization will hold its annual Designer House Tour on Friday, May 6th with six exclusive homes decorated by renowned designers in the gold coast enclaves of Fairfield, Southport and Westport. This year's theme is "Celebrating the Art of Living."

Kicking off the day’s event is a pre-tour Designer Power breakfast at the Patterson Club in Fairfield featuring visionary designer Anthony Baratta, one of the country's most celebrated and respected interior designers. His work has graced and been featured in countless luxury, shelter and lifestyle publications including Architectural Digest, World of Interiors, House Beautiful, House & Garden and Veranda. The designer will be discussing the many ways in which color and design can be used in the home. He will also be available to sign his most recent book, All-American, The Exuberant Style of William Diamond and Anthony Baratta.

During the afternoon take a refreshing break and enjoy an Afternoon Tea Party at a magnificent private home with lush and fragrant gardens. A continuous service is being offered between 1:00 – 3:00 pm and will be catered by The Royal Tea Company. As you enter the front door of the elegant home you will enjoy the spectacular views of the pool and gardens. The afternoon tea will be served in the home’s first floor entertaining space with access to several terraces with lovely views. Stroll through the gardens or relax and mingle while enjoying a dainty, bountiful array of tea sandwiches and delicious, freshly baked confections as well as a signature tea blend, all in a magnificent private home in Fairfield.

Ticket prices for the Designer House Tour are $65 in advance or $75 on the day of the tour. The Designer Breakfast is $75.

Serena & Lily saves a house from demolition and opens a design shop in Westport, Connecticut

Last Thursday I had the opportunity to attend a quiet opening of the newest Serena & Lily Design Shop, which is located at the historic, three-story Kemper-Gunn House. Built in 1889, the house is a celebrated landmark in the town of Westport. Slated for demolition to make room for a new development, the house was picked up and moved in November 2014 to its current 35 Elm Street location.

Serena Dugan, the company's co-founder and chief design officer, said in a company press release that they were "drawn to Westport and this particular location because we saw an opportunity to bring our brand to a quintessential East Coast town in the most idyllic of showcases -- a historic mansion in the center of town... It's a dream opportunity and project."

Customers will find a full line of bedding, bath, furniture, fabric, rugs, lighting, décor, nursery and art in settings for the dining room, living room and bedroom, as well as a swatch wall with more than 300 original Serena & Lily textile designs; rotating displays of more than 150 original art works; design advisers, and availability to interior designers for private appointments, client meetings and presentations during and outside regular store hours.

The store is positively stunning and makes full use of the beautifully renovated 3 story house in a perfectly curated show-house manner. I was able to snap a few images before the party, but had to return for more on Friday as the event was wall to wall people without much elbow room, let alone photo opportunities! The turnout was indeed tremendous. The quiet opening was anything but quiet! Peruse along with me in the images below.

15 Stunning ways to incorporate your book collections into your home decor

It's a wonderful problem for a book lover to have - finding a place to store all one's literature in a manner that is both efficient and beautiful. In this piece I share some ideas for homes large and small that are both functional and stunning.

One can never have too many books. Ever. In fact, a home without books is like a home without art. It lacks warmth and dimension and intellectuality. Books serve a multitude of functions, and when displayed in bookshelves, on coffee tables, even in carefully curated piles they completely transform a space. Like art acquired for collections or from travels, books are another form of creative expression in home decor. Some homes are large enough to house separate office spaces and libraries, many are not. Smaller homes can find multiple uses for rooms, a dining room can be transformed to a working library. Who wouldn't love to dine amongst a hundred books? What a conversation starter that would be! Guest rooms can double up as home offices with book-lined walls. Attic spaces and dry basements can be completely transformed to become unique libraries in their own rights. Add some shelves to a window nook. Remove the doors from a large closet and line it with shelves. Create book nooks in corners, in lofts, in kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways. Some homes have large built-in bookshelves. Others do not. In the past I have created walls of books using inexpensive book cases from Ikea, they can be painted or remained untouched. I love the look of books piled on tables - coffee, end, and dining... Do remember to dust them frequently! When it comes to displaying the books, the possibilities are endless as long as we can step out of the proverbial book box!

The Bold and The Beautiful :: Pink Packs a Powerful Punch in Home Decor

I happen to adore pink. I prefer the bright, bold in your face pink. Dramatic shades that push the buttons between comfort and edgy. A ballet slipper hue pushed to the edge of safety, paired with a strong masculine color or print - so that it screams out "Look at me, I'm no wallflower!" I love a pink that dares to be different with a spirit that's both adventurous and dangerous. I go weak at the knees with deep shades that shake things up, with warm corals that add youth and energy and transform a space from safe and traditional to a modernistic one that dares to the push the envelope. Is pink ever really safe? I think it takes a strong sense of self to live with it.

When pink is partnered with a classic hue such as blue, white, beige, even green what transpires is a space that is so much more than room; it becomes a work of art, a three dimensional, livable canvas. Pink transforms the ordinary to create the extraordinary. Below are some of my favorite pink spaces. Not one can be called quiet or demure. It was the ceiling in the image below in a room created by Parker Kennedy that long ago captured my attention and inspired this piece. Depending on how spirited your personal style is, whether you prefer a just splash, a pop or to go all out, there is a shade for you.

Blue evokes feelings of calm, tranquility and peacefulness. It is the color of a cloudless sky and the ocean. It is instantly relaxing. It's also a color that evokes feelings of trust, stability, loyalty, confidence and truth. Stronger, deeper shades equate masculinity and are associated with depth, expertise and stability. It's a color that is used often in the business world. In the home it is viewed as a gender neutral color, appealing to both men and women. Lighter, paler blues evoke a peaceful, insightful setting while deep, bright and electric shades are energizing and exhilerating. Indigo, violet and periwinkle shades seem more mystical and spiritual. Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body and is often associated with slowing the mind - making it a perfect bedroom choice. Many experts will advise to steer clear of this color when designing a kitchen or dining room space, but I beg to differ. I'm quite fond of blue in the kitchen and in the dining room, especially when paired with crisp clean white accents.

While in the home blue and white is often associated with coastal living - a seaside cottage in Maine, on Cape Cod, Nantucket or Newport, and indeed is a prefered color choice in this style of decor. But this hue is really so accommodating as it lends itself to many styles and settings from a hip and urban, to elegant, formal and austere and everything in between. Because blue and white is such a crisp and clean combination, they also work well with a host of other colors that can be used to accent the home and highlight the seasons.

Exposed :: The warm, rustic charm of exposed brick

I first fell in love with the look of exposed brick walls during my Boston years where they are prevalent in many of the older Brownstones, restaurants and shops. These walls convey a feeling of warmth and enveloping comfort. To me, the exposed brick reflected the city's rich history while embracing the youthful flair and artsy style of a modern generation. They were "Hipster" before "Hipster" existed.

The look of exposed brick inside the home is seeing a new popularity. To trace their popularity, one needs to look at the history of American architecture. Brick became a popular building material during the Georgian era (1700s). The Georgian style had a traditional, stately appearance that appealed to many and was tremendously popular in England. Masters of all crafts trained and specialized in this style. It's popularity took off and found its way across the Pond to the New England and the Southern Colonies. Initially, American Georgian homes were built of wood but those with means, who could afford more expensive and luxurious materials were drawn to brick. The Georgian style of architecture led the way to the Federal style and these styles are still found in the historic cities and towns (like Boston, Nantucket and Newport) along the Eastern seaboard.

Though architectural styles have changed, brick remained a popular building material. Because cities like Boston have much of their original architecture intact, interiors with exposed brick walls are prevalent. Brick remains a popular material, less from an architectural viewpoint, and more from the world of interiors. And while there are many "modern" homes with new brick, there's something to be said for the rusticity and the history of the old. I have deep appreciation and fondness for all things old, historic and traditional and combining them with items from a more modern lifestyle. Whether in an historic New England home, a farmhouse kitchen or an urban loft with high ceilings and oversized windows, the look of exposed brick complements a multitude of lifestyles and decorating styles.

How to keep luxuriously warm during an ice (or any kind of) storm

We had an unanticipated, unexpected ice storm this weekend which seemed to take much of the Eastern Seaboard from Virginia up through Connecticut by surprise. Cold rain turns to immediately turns to ice when it hits an icy cold pavement. This can cause black ice which is most dangerous because it looks like a wet surface and not a slippery surface. Once unsuspecting motorists hit a patch of black ice, nothing can be done to prevent a skid. On Sunday roads and highways were riddled with accidents. The ice even caused a fatality in nearby New Haven (home to Yale University.) Mid Morning I got a phone call from my town's police department strongly urging all non-emergency and non-essential vehicles to stay off the roads. With no pressing place to be and three children safe with me, we decided to hunker down at home. We often to lose power during ice storms. The weight of the ice on the branches tends to pull them down, often on to nearby electrical wires. So I cranked up the heat and made sure that every "device" was plugged in and charging. It was a perfect day to cozy up under blankets with magazines, books and warm cups of coffee - cocoa for the kids.

There's nothing like the feel of fur against the skin which makes it a great accessory for the home. When I was a young child my mother had received a beautiful black fur coat as a gift from my father. It was, in my young mind, the most elegant thing I had ever seen. My mother wore her coat inside out. Well, it wasn't inside out so much as it was reversible, but she always had the fur on the inside. This made no sense to me, until one day I tried it on. I had never felt anything as soft, wonderful, magical or luxurious in the world. Years later, when I was in my 30s, my mother gifted me her coat but it never fit properly. My shoulders are a good bit broader than hers, so she took it back!

As my tastes evolve, with the times and my age, I have come to love fur, real and faux, both in fashion and in the home. It is dramatic and sophisticated and decadently comfortable. There are many wonderful, affordable, faux furs out there for all tastes and styles. Fur, in the home, is the perfect remedy for any ice or other winter storm!

Stylish Notes on Decor :: Orange Crush

If you ask me what my favorite color is, I'll tell you blue - all different hues from the deepest, darkest to the lightest and brightest - Hues with green, grey and purple undertones. Blue is a calming color - It relaxes, calms and soothes. If you were to ask me if I like orange, I'm not sure what my answer would be. It's not a color that initially pops into my mind - though as I look around me there are pops of it all over my home... Bursts of it in pillows and throws.

I've been toying with the idea of finding an old coffee table and painting it in a deep orange lacquer or high gloss. But then I toy with the idea of finding an orange and white rug and finding an antique coffee table to place on it in front of the couch. I had been using a beautiful old wooden trunk that I had fitted with a custom piece of glass, but it was too high - it blocked the view of our fireplace so I moved it. I love my fireplace. I want to enjoy it.

The room has a casual and lived in feel. With three children, comfortable and liveable is important, yet it needs to have a certain sophistication. I must meet the challenge of achieving my style within a limited budget, and a small kid-friendly space. I love an orange room, but because I am renting for the time being my walls will remain ivory white. (I'm finding these white walls increasingly hard to live with - all my homes were very colorful!)

Orange is really a very versatile color. It brightens, warms and energizes a space. It's youthful and whimsical, yet sophisticated elegant.
