10 Reasons why I love Mondays and why you should too!

1. You get to write a whole new chapter. Who doesn't love new beginnings? Fresh starts? Let's make this new chapter a page-turner!

2. Set new goals. So last week wasn't the most productive. Write down your goals. Place them in a prominent spot and work at realizing them!

3. I fell off my diet wagon last week and had a hard time getting back on. That won't happen this week. I'm already prepared!

4. Try something new. Anything. Just do it. You'll be glad you did.

5. Mondays are like mini New Years... set mini resolutions. They're so much easier to stick to!

6. Mon means My in French. Therefore Monday = Myday! Make it a kickass one!

7. It's all how you look at it really. If you think Mondays are going to suck, well, they pretty much are. Be your own spin doctor. Make your Monday a Magnificent one!

8. Mondays are the perfect day to start planning for the weekend!

9. Celebrate this day. Celebrate yourself! Plan something special to make the day more exciting. Go ahead and pamper yourself if you'd like - You deserve it!

10. Mondays are perfect for dreaming, reaching and achieving... You can do it!

Have a marvelous, magnificent Monday!

World's Best Father!

Have you heard of him? Have you seen him? If you haven't you will now!

Maryland-based photographer and father David Engledow began taking photographs of his daughter Alice Bee when she was an infant. The photographs, a series of tongue-in-cheek pictures were created to as a means of poking fun at the type of father Engledow hopes never to become.

The very first picture taken of Alice was with his wife when the baby was just a couple of months old. It was intended to be a single image of himself as a sleep-deprived and clueless new father. The main prop used was a mug that said "World's best Father" which ultimately became the source of amusement, and the inspiration behind these hilarious pictures.

Engledow told Huffington Post that “The character I portray in this series is intended to be a parody of the father I hope I never become -- distracted, self-absorbed, neglectful, clueless, or even occasionally overbearing." The photographer is currently on Kickstarter, where he’s raising money to turn the images into a calendar.

He adds that while the situations look perilous, his "cardinal rule is always to make sure that Alice is never actually in any danger." Engledow and Alice normally pose separately, and he Photoshops the images together into a final product.

For more of these hilariously-delightfully fun images, visit his Facebook page!
I hope you have a wonderful and Magnificent Monday and that these images bring a smile to your face!
XOXO,

Jessica

Have yourself a Magnificent Monday and a perfect Cappuccino!

It's a magnificent Monday indeed, in New England. The sun is rising, the air is crisp and cool and perfect for waking up slowly with a nice warm cup of coffee, cappuccino or hot cocoa. Grab a blanket, make yourself comfortable on the couch and enjoy your morning before you head of to school. We're lucky today in Connecticut, as the children have no school in observation of the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana. I'll get my work done and do something lovely with the children.

I was approached earlier this summer by the PR group that represents PhilipsSaeco espresso machines. I was asked if I would review one of their machines. I explained immediately that I do not blog for free and if I am to try a product I must be provided with one. I will not review products that do not represent me, my personal style or my brand. And I won't write a bad review. So if I don't like your product you won't see unkind words, but I will not write about a product I cannot stand behind.
And so, let's continue with the Philips Saeco Syntia espresso machine.

Philips Saeco Syntia Focus Automatic Espresso Machine, Black

After a couple of months of emailing back and forth and not sure whether I would be reviewing the machine or not, I was very pleasantly surprised to see a huge box in my garage from Philips. I hurriedly carried it inside and proceeded to open the package like a young child on Christmas. Except it wasn't Christmas and I am not a young child. The machine was beautiful, big, fairly heavy and very solidly built. My old, poor looking coffee maker was quickly tossed aside like a piece of stale bread. She looked gorgeous on the counter beneath the area I call the coffee bar. I grabbed the directions to read, something I tend never to do but I could tell directions were necessary here...

The manual, filled with small illustrations, was admittedly a bit confusing to me. It took me a few tries to get my cup of coffee brewing. But once I had it figured out it was simple. Oh so simple.
This model uses both ground and whole bean coffee. I wholeheartedly recommend using a whole bean variety and do get a good quality coffee for this machine.

I loved the fact that this machine's grinder is not terribly loud. It's sort of a pleasant whirring sound whereas many grinders sound like turbo jets on take off. The quietness means I can grind my coffee when I get up long before the sun does and the rest of my family can stay asleep!

I set my coffee strength and cup size.

There are three strengths to choose from and I chose the middle (and I like my coffee quite strong)
and I generally choose the larger cup option as opposed to the demi tasse or espresso cup option.

The coffee is perfect every single time.
It comes out strong and black with just amount of light froth on top, indicating that it's been brewed at just the right temperature.

I like my cappuccino. It's the drink of choice to start my day.
I've used both 2% and 1% to froth my milk to see if the fat content made any difference. It didn't. Both froth beautifully - once I figured out how to get a nice thick froth. And the 1% tasted as rich and creamy as the 2% did.  (So I use the 1% to save some fat and calories)

The Syntia does not come with a metal frothing pitcher so I had to go and purchase one.
It took a few tries to get the froth right and I made a little bit of a mess in the beginning but now I've got it down to a science and, for the most part, I have consistent froth every time.

I love the consistency of the machine. My coffee tastes the same every time. There's no guesswork in adjusting the strength. With past machines I often had some cups that were stronger than others, or some that were even the slightest bit weak. (And I have never skimped on coffee machines. I have always bought high quality and well-rated machines.)
But this is by far the best I have ever had.
I can have a fully frothed cappuccino in about 3 minutes.
I do not need to use the stove to heat my milk.

The machine, at close to $1,000 USD does not come cheap. It's an investment and for a true coffee enthusiast who wants a consistently good cup of coffee. I always buy my beans at Starbucks and yet I like my coffee better than theirs.

There is, however, some maintenance required.
The frothing wand should be removed and cleaned fairly often.
The drip tray should be emptied and washed every other day or so.
The coffee hopper needs to be emptied and washed. A light comes out indicating so.
And the inside needs to be wiped out of coffee grounds, can be quite messy.
The machine warms and then "spits out" hot water after it has been in its resting mode - you may want a small cup on hand for this. I do not want my milk watered down and a couple of tablespoons of water are pushed through prior to the water turning to steam.
Keep a sponge or some paper towels nearby.

But all good things are worth a bit of extra care.

In short here are some pros and cons.

Pro:
She (Syntia is a girl, no?) is a beautiful, well built machine.
She grinds fairly quietly.
She makes a perfect cup of coffee/espresso every time.
There is no guesswork involved.
She delivers a thick, full, rich froth.
There's a setting that dispenses hot water for tea,
in case you are feeling under the weather and want a cup of tea instead.
The machine automatically goes into a rest/energy saving mode if it has been idle for an hour.

Cons:

Cleanup can be a bit messy.
The instruction manual is a bit confusing.
The price-point is a bit high.
A machine of this price-point really should come with a metal frothing carafe.

After playing around with coffee we decided to make some hot cocoa - In July!
The cocoa frothed beautifully, and then we added a touch of whipped cream for extra decadence.
So now my kids love this machine too!
Next we tried to steam some apple cider. That too worked beautifully.
Now my kids love this machine even more!

Here is my machine. Ain't she a beaut?!
Her name is Syntia :)
I took this with my iPhone, on Instagram

There was a bit of a learning curve involved... My milk made a little bit of a mess early on!

I cannot imagine starting my Monday without my Philips Saeco Syntia machine...
I am sure my Monday is more Magnificent because of it!

On a scale of 1 to 10 Coffee Beans,
I give this model a solid 9 Beans!

And I may even end my Monday on a most Magnificent note as well...
How about an Affogato for dessert?

Affogato
via Pinterest

This was my dessert of choice when I visited my grandparents at their country house in Umbria. There was a small family-owned restaurant we adored called Bruno's in the tiny town called Citta della Pieve.
They had the best food I have ever had.
And this was one of their dessert selections.
You can make it at home too.

Simply place a scoop of ice cream in a glass or coffee cup and then pour your espresso right over it.
Delicimo!
(Is that a word?
Well, it is now!)

I hope you all have a Delicimo Monday!

XOXO

Celebrate Monday... Celebrate the last days of Summer... Celebrate the start of something new!

For many of our children, and for many of us, this Monday marks not only the beginning of a new day, and new week but a New Year. Today is the first day of school. There's excitement, as children look forward to getting back to their friends. There's trepidation, as many children are starting school for the first time or are embarking on the journey to a new high school or college. And there's elation, as parents all around rejoice to have some semblance of normalcy, structure and rhythm to their daily routines again... And then we'll remember how we've forgotten about the craziness of our lives with the advent of sports and all the other extra-curricular activities, followed by hours of homework late into the night... And before we know it we will all secretly be wishing for the restful days of summer to return! We'll be wishing that we didn't have to be at three different locations at once, and we'll be wishing to spend less time rushing, and less time driving and less time and less money at the gas pump! Ah, be careful of what we wish for, they say. And indeed it is true!

My youngest one starts school on Thursday. (The point of starting so late in the week? I am not entirely sure!) My older two start the following Wednesday, after Labor Day, as all schools should start.

For all my whining and bellyaching, begging, pleading, wishing for school to start, I am the first to admit that I am not entirely ready to let my littlest one go. I could keep him home with me for a few more weeks. My older two desperately need to go back. They need their friends. They need structure. They need to step away from their computers, iPads, iPhones, DSs... I'll allow the Kindles. They need to create and interact and use their brains. If you have teens you will understand. They are a completely different beast. They do not engage themselves in play the way the little ones do. They don't pick up games, or Legos or arts and crafts - unless I force them to do so, and even still the results are iffy at best.

My littlest one still plays. I love watching him at play. He can play with Legos or his cars or his army men for hours on end. He can take an old fashioned teeter-tauter and decorate it with different colored electrical tape so that, in the end, it looks like something that could have been created by Piet Mondrian. Or he'll grab a bucket of buttons, a glue gun (under my supervision) and completely cover an old pickle jar with colorful buttons of all sizes and shapes - We're still on the hunt for a perfect candle to place inside. He creates menus... he's wildly creative. He'll go outside and kick a ball around, or blow bubbles, or draw on the driveway with chalk. These are all the things my older two did when they were little but seem to have forgotten how... or seem to have lost interest... or simply, have just grown up...I'm not quite ready to let this child go... Summer is for little children... the excitement of seeing a firefly for the very first time in the season, for catching it in a jar, for building sandcastles, chasing butterflies, catching frogs...

Today, we will spend our day traipsing through Target, CVS and Staples locating all the items on our back to school lists... A grown-up treasure hunt, if you will, with items so esoteric we'll scratch our heads as we walk down aisles locating a certain type of zippered accordion folder that seems not to exist here on earth. We'll be loading up our carts with papers, pens, pencils, composition notebooks, two pocket folders, and loose-leaf binders. I will be purchasing at least a dozen binders today. A dozen. And at least two dozen notebooks! My daughter needs a special calculator that costs $100. Seriously. I beg to ask, whatever happened to counting on your fingers? And this may have something to do with the fact that my basic math comprehension does go beyond the 4th grade curriculum. I do still love back to school shopping and I am looking forward to picking up a few things for myself.

So, this week will be a combination of wrapping up the end of summer and enjoying the last of what she has to offer. We will also be focused on preparing for the New Year ahead. Another season is over. Another season is about to start. Another summer bids us farewell, another fall greets us warmly, with open arms.

Our children are getting older... Time doesn't stand still and we shouldn't either... We may complain, we may wish it to pass, and then it does, in the blink of an eye and all we have left is a fleeting memory. I've complained over and over again about this never-ending summer, but truthfully I know that every moment should be savored - Every moment is precious.  Please remember to embrace the moments -  the good and the bad, the happy and sad... Our children really do grow up too fast!

I need to start savoring the every day, the ordinary day...

So this Monday marks the beginning of a new week and the beginning of the end of summer for us. We have been given a last chance, allowing us to enjoy our last summer ice creams, our last trips to the beach, our last romps on the playground... our last days of sleeping in... These days, as much as I begged for their arrival, are indeed bittersweet.

Happy Monday to you all... Celebrate Monday... Celebrate the last days of summer... Celebrate the start of something new!

XOXO

Magnificent Monday... Magnificent My Day!

Many of you took off last week to enjoy the 4th and your families... Now you must return to reality... but that's not a bad thing! For many of us the temperatures are cooling and the humidity is easing up a bit... It's a new day... it's a new week... Make it fabulous! Set out to achieve those goals... Set out to make the week a memorable one... Take a moment out of your day to call a friend or write a letter... Indulge in something fabulous... something that will lift your spirits - perhaps a handbag or a new pair of shoes, perhaps something as simple as an ice cream cone... Go to the movies, alone! It's the most amazing experience... Cook up a dinner and invite a couple of friends over... Paint your toes a fun color... Get a hair cut... go blonde, or brunette or orange! Try something new... follow your heart... follow your dreams!

Go and Dream Something!
Go and Do Something!

After all it's Monday
and Mondays are Magnificent!

It's Magnificent Monday... It's Magnificent My Day!

The weekend is over... it was a good one, wasn't it? It really flew by! Now we're back in the rush, back in the rat race... running all over town, rushing here and there... the office awaits, meetings and projects beckon... deadlines loom in the not too distant horizon. The kids, the sports, activities, play dates... But don't lose yourself in the chaos... try not to get overwhelmed by the details... Ease into our week gently. Have a cup of coffee, sip, relax, and savor... Savor the quiet of the morning before the rest of the family is awake... Savor the calm and tranquility. I find that I have the best days when I don't have to wake up and hit the ground running. I make lists. I love my lists. I have my To Do lists... those banal projects, grocery lists, and most importantly the lists of things that I want to accomplish - the list of personal goals. I find, for some reason, I get more done when I make lists. I love to take my pen and cross those words off the page!

So as we start out Monday, our Magnificent Monday, let's ease into her slowly... let's enjoy our coffee and figure out what we want to accomplish today and this week.

But Monday isn't about rushing... Monday is about accomplishing, assessing and setting goals... Monday is about new ideas and new opportunities. Mondays shouldn't be looked upon in a gloom and doom way. Mondays should be about celebration... celebrating all the wonderful possibilities and potentials that can come our way!

Today is the day... today is your day!

Carpe diem.

Always start your day with gentle ease and simplicity...

Magnificent Monday! Magnificent My Day!

Another weekend has come and gone. It is the dawn of a new week filled with endless possibilities and hope. I have a full week on my plate with lunches and dinners and meetings and, the best part of all #brimfield 2012 - the largest antiques show in the country, in Brimfield Massachusetts. I'll be joining thousands... millions of others, I wonder? Lovers of antiques and collectibles... designers, bloggers, stylists, writers... I will be joining some incredibly talented and wonderful people. I hope to not walk away empty handed!

I hope this is a productive week that will lead to fabulous connections, new friendships and projects galore. It will be busy. It will be a whirlwind. My feet will be sore. My head will be spinning, I'm sure. I'll be flying from excitement. I'll need to make sure that I am well rested and eat properly as I tend not to do when there's a flurry of excitement and energy around me.

Fresh!

At the end of the day I must take a few minutes to myself to refocus,
regroup and recharge for the next day...

I wandered into my new local pharmacy and saw Vitabath and Kneipp products whose wonderful aromas  reminded my of my summers in the South of France as a child...

I'm not the greatest water drinker, but the more active and the busier I am, I must force myself to drink enough... I keep a bottle in my bag and on those days when it seems I spend more time in the car, I keep a couple of bottles in a cooler with a few ice packs.

Drink your Water!!!

I dress comfortably but prepared to meet anyone and anything that comes my way. I'll never know when a new opportunity will present itself.

Great way to dress up denim. Nice shoes too!

Magnificent Monday... Magnificent My Day and my "Gift from the Sea"

"One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. One can collect only a few,and they are more beautiful if they are few. One moon shell is more impressive than three. There is only one moon in the sky. One double-sunrise is an event; six are a succession, like a week of school days. Gradually one discards and keeps just the perfect specimen, not necessarily a rare shell, but a perfect one of its kind. One that sets it apart by itself, ringed around by space - like the island."

I'm going to do something differently this Monday. I am going to share with you one of my favorite books, Anne Morrow Lindhberg's A Gift From the Sea. It's about slowing down and absorbing life... it's about taking stock in what you have, all that you have... and no matter what our wants, wishes or struggles are, we really have so much. Sometimes it's hard to see that. With our busy and hectic schedules in our even more fast-paced lives, it's hard to slow down and smell the roses, or in this case, the ocean. But it's so important. It's an absolute necessity, and no matter how crazy our days are, there is no reason why we cannot create even 20 minutes to smell the ocean breezes.

Sit down with a cup of tea, share a snuggle on the couch with a loved one... write a letter, pick up a book or a magazine, or just sit and close your eyes and do nothing. I've been a huge advocate for slowing down for many, many years now. It started when my children were very young, in diapers and so very needy of my time and attention. I have never been so exhausted as when my children were babies. It was then that I created time for myself every day. Sometimes I hired a babysitter. Sometimes family members came over to help and sometimes I waited until my husband came home and I'd seek refuge in the bathroom (it had a lock!) and crawl into the tub with my bubbles, a great book and a glass of wine. I still do this from time to time, and while my life has changed and my children are much older, I am no less busy. I still need to recharge my batteries. We all do.

I still take stock and reassess my life. Every day. We all should. It's so important in helping us to grow, reflect and chase down our next dream... Whether we're just entering the working world, whether we're starting to create families of our own, or letting our children go and pursue their own dreams, our lives and needs and interests and desires are constantly changing and evolving.

And so, I want to share with you this book, A Gift from the Sea. I don't want to do it in the traditional sense. I don't want to host a book giveaway, though that was my first intent. I want this book to travel around the blogosphere. I want each and every one of us who read it to sign it and pass it on to someone else. I want to know where the book is each and every step of the way and I want to know your thoughts and what you took from the book... This is a gift from me to you, that you in turn can share... and so on and so on and so on...

What do you think of this idea? If you would like to participate leave me a note. Thanks!

I hope you'll read this at the end of your day... perhaps in the tub, perhaps on a couch, in bed, in a hammock under a large shady tree... I hope you'll enjoy it with a refreshing drink or a celebratory glass of bubbly!

Happy Monday, Happy My Day!

XOXO

Easy Like Monday Morning... Magificent Monday, Magnificent My Day!

It's rainy and cool on the East Coast. We were way overdue. We were ready for some downtime... some time to take advantage of getting things done around the house, or getting nothing done at all. I did a little bit of both. It was perfect. It was amazing! And yet, I'm still feeling kind of lazy. I need a slow and easy start to my Monday and that's exactly what I'll do. I'll make myself a cappuccino, as I do every single solitary morning. It's so easy to do. You don't need one of those expensive doo-dad-gizmo-fancy-shmancy machines. I assure you! You can use your regular coffee maker, or if you have a little more time,

a French press is what you ought to have...  really!

but if you're in a rush then use your automatic drip machine. It's what I do, truth be told... I program it so that it's all ready for me when I wake up... unless I decide to get up at some ungodly hour like 4:30 or 5:00 as I have been doing as of late... Sigh... So really, a good cappuccino is even more important!

All you need is this...

this little gadget will run you $20... and really whips up a mean froth!

Next you need this...

Serisouly... this milk is da bomb! I hate lowfat milk. I hate skim milk. It's gross. Makes my coffee taste all watery. I love the flavor of whole milk in my coffee but will not buy it or drink it. And then a couple of years ago I found this stuff... And my life changed. I kid you not! I can have the calories of skinny (gross) milk and the flavor and texture of whole milk. My cappuccino's happy and I'm happy. What more could I ask for? And, the best part is that I can save my calories for, yep, my wine glass!

Heat the milk, about 1/4 of a cup in a sauce pan. (You could microwave it but it really isn't as good. And the French and Italians would never dare to do such a thing.) Pour your milk into your cup or mug and insert the Aerolatte blender. You will have thick creamy broth in a matter of seconds. The longer you whip, the creamier the froth. And then you will have this...

via

Now, I'll take my cappuccino and head back into bed... because it's cold and rainy and I'm feeling particularly lazy and I need my slow start.

I have the comfiest bed in the whole world! I bought myself a featherbed before I moved. Have you ever slept on a featherbed? Divine! I have not one but two duvets. And I just bought the softest silkiest sheets. They're Ralph Lauren. They weren't at all what I was looking for but they called to me. I'm thinking of getting the checked ones as well. I think they'd look very well with these. (The sheets were very reasonable. I found them at Home Goods, my new favorite store!) I'm not a matchy-matchy girl at all. I like the soft elegance of the black and white. It suits my bedroom and the furniture very well.  My bedrooms have always been in blue and white. This is a nice change for me.

I think a good, comfortable bed that's a sanctuary is so very important. When I was trying to figure out where to set up my desk and office in our very small space someone suggested I set it up in my bedroom, which is really quite large, but I vehemently opposed. I wanted my bedroom to be a place I could go to rest and relax. My bedrooms have always been my quiet sanctuaries. I think to set up work space would be very unsettling and I sleep so poorly as it is.

Flowers are a must in any bedroom! Their color and fragrance can add instant decor and instant serenity. I love flowers that are aromatic and soothing, like lillies, lilacs, hyacinths...

I'm madly, passionately in love with this refreshing, clean scent! I have been using this for years - half my life I believe! Here's a funny story for you... I'd been on a few dates with this guy when I was in my early 20s and I invited him back to my place and he went in to use my bathroom. He came out holding one of my towels to his face. He couldn't stop smelling it! On it lingered the sesame oil fragrance. I looked at him incredulously and immediately thought he was the biggest wacko on the face of the earth. I never made contact with him ever again! I learned two things that day. 1) My towels really did smell that good and 2) it seems I would continue to come across all the rest of the biggest wackos on the face of the earth... and probably will continue to do so for the rest of my life!

Now, we've been taking our sweet time... we need to hurry things along a little...

We need to put on our happy scents... One of my most favorites is
